Frugal Friday: Easy Ma-Po Tofu


For this frugal Friday, we present to you Chinese’s mother’s secret recipe for Ma-Po Tofu. Chinese basically grew up on this dish! Judging from the amount of flavor in this Ma-Po Tofu, you might expect it’s really difficult to make. Truth is, the original version might be include quite a few more steps and ingredients, but this cheater’s version can be done within 15 minutes, tops. Once again, this Chinese dish features one of our favorite ingredients: oyster sauce. I’m not sure if we’ve stressed enough how this should be a kitchen staple for everyone! One bottle of this in your cupboard will guarantee instant umami flavor and success for many meals to come. Last but not least, this satisfying meal comes to down to only 2.20 per person, including some fluffy white rice and crunchy veggies!

Ma-po tofu for four
○ 500g white tofu €1.29 ○ 500g minced meat (beef or pork) €2.89 ○ 1 head of bok choy €1.69 ○ bottle of oyster sauce €1.27 ○ bottle of (sweet) chili sauce €0.99 ○ 400g white rice €0.69 ○ 2 minced garlic cloves €0.05 ○ Optional garnishes: sesame seeds and spring onion

Boil the white rice (in a ricecooker) according to the instructions. Roughly chop the bok choy. Drain and cut the tofu into cubes (about 2×2 cm). In a large wok pan over medium high heat, add some oil and the garlic. After half a minute, add in the minced meat. Wok for 3-4 minutes until the meat browns, then add the tofu cubes. After another minute, add the bok choy and stir in 5 tablespoons of the oyster sauce and 4 tablespoons of the chili sauce. Wok for the final minute and then serve over the white rice with some sesame seeds and spring onion for garnish, if you like.
